Breeding

Breeding of canines can be challenging, as the success depends on ovulation timing.

It’s recognized that up to 75% of failures to conceive can be attributed to incorrect timing of breeding. While most dogs follow a typical heat cycle, the timing and length of each stage within the heat cycle can vary by days. Breeding at the optimal time can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy, litter size, and reduce the need for multiple breeding attempts. It is also important to ensure that the male dog who is available for breeding at the optimal time is using a stud dog.

Why Consider This Test?

Female dogs typically go into heat every six to eight months, but the timing and length of each cycle can vary significantly. Progesterone is an important hormone during the cycle. The rise and fall of progesterone levels can indicate when the female is ovulating, and in turn help breeders pinpoint the optimal time for breeding.
